After a number of years of teaching Mathematics, Physical Science and Biology at secondary and teacher training levels in the public sector, Nathan was appointed as a teacher, Deputy Principal and Principal at Brothers’ College Kimberley from 1990 to 1996. Nathan was appointed as Deputy Director of the Catholic Institute of Education in January 1997 and in 1999 became the first layperson to be appointed as Director. He has extensive experience in education policy and finance and played a role in negotiations with the then Ministry of Education and the national and provincial education departments regarding Catholic public and independent schools and post-school education and training from 1994 onwards. From September 2000 to June 2001, Nathan was a Harvard-South Africa Fellow at Harvard Business School, where he completed the Programme for Management Development. He was also a Visiting Fellow in the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Following his return as CIE Director in July 2001, Nathan was elected as Chairman of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) in August 2001. In 2003 he completed the Programme in Financial Management and in 2004, the Programme in Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management with the Unisa Centre for Business Management. Nathan is a member of the Catholic Board of Education Audit, Risk and Human Resources Committee and is responsible for the administration of the Catholic Education Trust.
Nathan has been a Director of the Christian Brothers Association (CBA) since 2016 and has represented the CBA on the Board of Governors of St. Boniface High School in Galeshewe, Kimberley since January 2002 and the Board of Christian Brothers College Boksburg since 2020. He currently serves on the Board of the Independent Examinations Board as Deputy Chairperson, Chairperson of the Audit Committee and a member of the Board Executive and Governance committees. He is also the Chairperson of the Board of JET Education Services and chairs the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. The Minister of Basic Education appointed Nathan to a further term on the Fifth Umalusi Council for General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance in June 2018 after serveing from June 2015. He continues to serve a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. Nathan was appointed as a member of the Audit and Risk Committee of the South African Qualifications Authority in September 2017 and served until December 2020.
